Wall lights without the hassle

There are times when a space needs additional light. In an ideal world you would use a wall light to do the job but installing them can be a real pain. They usually need to be hard-wired, which requires an electrician and can be expensive or, if you’re in a rented space, just not possible.

However there is a solution: plug-in wall lights. The lights are ultimately the same as hard wired options style wise, the only difference being that, like a table or floor lamp, the fitting has a wire that plugs straight into a wall socket, so there’s no need for the electrician. For some the exposed wire may not be ideal but they tend to have fabric cords and with some clever styling they don’t have to be a big drawback. The selection of lighting available is extensive with options to suit all budgets. Below is a selection of some of my favourites.

Compact Lights

These lights are perfect for smaller spaces. They might get lost on a large walls but are ideal for areas where clever space saving options are needed. They have similar dimensions but each with slightly different characteristics.

Long Armed Lights

These are real feature lights. They can be moved to give light around a room not just on the wall they're on, in a way they can act as an alternative to a suspension light. They can be used to highlight central areas of a room, for instance over a dining or coffee table.

Mid-size Lights

There were lots of options that could have gone in here. I would categorise these lights as good all rounders. They work in a range of spaces and come in a broad range of styles, materials and finishes. There really is a plug in option to suit all styles.

Something a little different

Perch is a light from Moooi, a brand known for there slightly off the wall pieces. Perch finds the right line design-wise by not falling into the trap of being gimmicky. It's clear to see this light is base on a bird form but by using and origami style it doesn't come across to cartoonish and it's finished with some lovely brass detailing.
